Detailed Email Setup Instructions for Thunderbird:
Throughout the instructions below, simply replace the words in italics with the information we have provided you. So for example where it says username you would put your actual email address.
- Open the Thunderbird program so that it is running
- If this is first time you have run Thunderbird and it launches with a popup asking for Your name, Email address and Password then you can skip to step 5, otherwise...
Click on [Tools] and then [Account Settings...] - Click on [Account Actions]
- Choose "Add Mail Account..."
- Enter your name for example "John Smith"
- Enter your Email address
- Enter your Password and click [Continue].
- Thunderbird will now try and work out the correct settings, leave it to finish running then click on the [Edit] button
- Set the user name to your Email Address
- Set the "Incoming:" values to...
mailrelay.sparticle.com
IMAP
993
SSL/TLS - Set the "Outgoing:" values to...
mailrelay.sparticle.com
SMTP
25
STARTTLS - Click [Re-test Configuration]
- Click [Create Account]
- Now go to [Tools] -> [Account Settings...] in the top menu
- In the window that appears click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left hand side list
- Select the account you just setup and click on [Edit...]
- Set the User Name: to your Email Address, then click [OK] - we are almost there!
- Now click on the "Server Settings" option under the account you've just created. You'll see a button that says "Advanced..." go ahead and click it.
- Set the value of "Maximum number of server connections to cache" to 1 then hit [OK] and then [OK] again to close the popup window.
- When first trying to send/receive email you should accept any security certificates if you are prompted to do so (You may find these windows get hidden behind others so if your mail initially falls to send or receive then check for those, accept them and try again).
That's all folks! All you have to do now is to start using it so click on the inbox and it should prompt you for your password. There is the option to remember your password so that you don't have to keep typing it in. That is your decission to make. If it's a laptop that might get lost/stolen then you have to make a judgement call. If it's a home machine then it's probably safe to do so. You will also find that the first time you send an email it will also ask you for a password. This is the same password. Again you decide if you want to remember it or not.
